Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Psychotherapy and Counselling ?

Counselling tends to be short term and focuses on a particular problem. Psychotherapy is more long term and tends to be more open ended. Therapy refers to both counselling and psychotherapy.

What about Confidentiality ?

I offer a guarantee of confidentiality. The information that is disclosed in the session is confidential and stays within the room. There are exceptions to this including my own supervision where I discuss my case load with my supervisor. Here, a person's identity is not disclosed. The issue of confidentiality is discussed in more detail in the initial session.

What is supervision ?

I am required by the I.A.C.T and the I.A.H.I.P. to attend supervision by an accredited therapist who is also a qualified supervisor, at least once a month. This ensures objectivity in my work.

How do I know if the therapist is the right person for me ?

A very important aspect of this work is that you feel comfortable with and are able to talk freely to your therapist. Most importantly of all is that you can trust your therapist. It is important to listen to and trust your instinct. You may need to find out your therapist's qualifications, experience, training and to what professional body they are accredited to.

How does therapy benefit a person ?

The goal of therapy is to increase self awareness, personal growth and change. The relationship between client and therapist is a means for experiencing this. Counselling / Psychotherapy can also help ones personal development in building self esteem, achieving greater self confidence, compassion, and assertiveness as well as performance enhancement.
