The Session

What can I expect to happen in the initial session?

The initial session is a consultation where both the therapist and client see if they can work together. As a therapist I facilitate the person in telling their story, what has brought them to therapy and what their expectations of the work are. It can be  helpful from the clients perspective if they have some idea of what they want from the therapy as well as their expectations of the work. This may take more than one session.

What happens after that?

If a person decides that they want to start therapy with me then I explain and discuss my contract which outlines :-

  • The issue of confidentiality.
  • An agreed time and day each week.
  • Cancellation policy.
  • Fees and method of payment. Payment is at the end of each session.
  • Commitment to the work.

What happens if I am not sure?

There is no obligation to proceed after the initial session. If you decide to go ahead I will give you an appointment that is suitable to both of us.

How long is the session?

It is one hour.

Will I be given advice or ideas on what to do to improve my situation ?

Therapy is not about giving answers, suggesting ideas or prescribing solutions. It is about working withsupporting and facilitating the person to discover what it is that they want or need.
