What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is an opportunity for you to explore difficulties that you may be experiencing in your daily life. These difficulties can include stress, lacking in confidence or motivation, relationship difficulties, loss of purpose or dissatisfaction in one's life.

In a private confidential setting you can talk freely and openly (which is not often possible with family or friends) to your therapist. By meeting at a regular time and place you can experience, perhaps for the first time, the freedom to talk openly, of not being judged and of being accepted unconditionally. By listening attentively and patiently your therapist can begin to understand the difficulties that you may be experiencing. By uncovering strengths and positive qualities and becoming aware of patterns of behaviour that hold you back or keep you stuck, it enables you to change, if you so choose, thereby creating a freedom in how you wish to live your life. Psychotherapy is a way of facilitating change, choice or reducing confusion.

In time you begin to experience a good relationship that is both accepting and containing. As the relationship with your therapist is the most important aspect of this work it is vital to the outcome that you feel comfortable with and that you can trust your therapist as well as feeling that they are competent.
