Professional Counselling

Counselling is a process where you make positive changes in your life. These changes are gradual and subtle and will have a positive effect on your daily life. Counselling tends to be more focused and deals with a specific issue. It is short term and can last from a number of weeks to several months.

Professional Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy seeks to look in depth at issues. Usually the issue has its origins in childhood. Problems caused by childhood experiences or the way a person sees and thinks about themselves are the main reasons why a person looks to psychotherapy as these issues can cause problems in the present. The purpose of psychotherapy is to get to the root of the problem thus enabling the individual to make positive lasting changes.

This process gives an individual an understanding of why problems developed at a particular time. It also helps them to understand emotions that were experienced at that time and, as a result, gain an understanding of patterns of behaviour which may have developed at that stage and still exist but no longer serve a purpose. As a result of this work one develops a better understanding of oneself.  Psychotherapy tends to be more open ended and can last from months to years.

Counselling and psychotherapy are terms that are used interchangeably. For the purposes of this website the term counselling will be used.

It is important that the person feels comfortable with the therapist that they are working with. Studies have shown that the most important aspect to therapy is the relationship between therapist and client. The relationship is built on trust, consistency, confidentiality, and a non-judgmental, supportive environment. Counselling is most effective if it takes place on a weekly basis. This consistency builds the relationship between the client and therapist which is the foundation of the therapeutic process.

This process takes time, it takes commitment and it takes work both from the client and the therapist.
